STATEMENT

I am in an eternal journey, exploring the world of calligraphy, “SHO”.

My calligraphy brushes are very long and very heavy.
One of them weighs more than 60 kg and is 5 meters in length.
When the brush is dipped in a huge tub of ink, it becomes heavier and very difficult to handle.
It is different from writing on a piece of paper on a desk.

“Why do I want to write with this huge brush?”

It is because there are expressions that can only be expressed by using the huge brush.
When I move my brush on a huge piece of canvas on the floor, I am not able to see the whole sheet.
I have to picture it in my mind. It is similar to writing with my eyes closed.
With my body and mind, I write.
There is no stopping and my pure soul will soon appear.

Japanese calligraphy is part of Japanese culture focused on “how to write beautifully”.
It is a type of formative art. The writer’s spiritualityand the darkness and the lightness of the ink.
Today, calligraphy is considered a self-discipline practice.

My parents took me to a calligraphy class when I was four.
This was the beginning of my journey to pursue the beauty of calligraphy.
It was not just to write words on a piece of paper.
By copying the master’s work, I learned different brush strokes, its chemistry and breathing.
I could feel its strength and honor. I learned the philosophy of that era from the art work of those who had gone before me. Through practicing and learning, I am able to communicate with my ancestors.

When you give a child a brush, he/she will play with it to get the feel of it. Then gradually he will learn how to put his brush on a piece of paper and he will find it fascinating to write. The brush becomes an extension of his hand.
This is one of the reasons I write.
This is the moment when my pure soul comes to life.
The calligraphy brushes, ink, ink-pads, and paper are carefully hand-crafted by craftsmen. These special tools used in different combinations create countless expressions.
I feel excited and blessed thinking about the numerous encounters I am about to experience.
I truly believe that I can connect to people all over the world through my calligraphy.
